All-new GradExpert at Busque & Laflamme

Comact: “Experienced and ingenious people!”

Companies Clermond Hamel Ltd. of Saint-Ephrem-de-Beauce and Busque & Laflamme Inc. of Saint-Benoît-Labre have done major equipment investments in the past few years. Mr. Carmin Hamel, chairman of both companies, did not hesitate to mandate PHL and Comact, two equipment manufacturers in wood processing and both companies of BID Group of Companies. He told us in an interview that the indisputable assets of this team are their experience and ingenuity.

In 2014, a large investment is done at the Clermond Hamel sawmill, when they purchased a CPG gang machine of PHL conception. The equipment optimization had then been done by Comact. Then in 2015, its Busque & Laflamme’s turn, a secondary processing plant, to significantly invest by the acquisition of a GradExpertTM, Comact’s automated lumber grader.

For the CPG gang machine, PHL and Comact’s engineering teams had two particular challenges. First, to design new efficient equipment that would meet the limited space restraint to which the mill was facing. Second, to design equipment which would also be capable of manufacturing a series of special products without increasing the parts flow in the mill. Mr. Hamel thus expresses himself when speaking about his acquisition: “We are 150% satisfied of this equipment! This is thanks to the ingenuity of these people that we now have a product that meets our requirements and gives us a higher efficiency than our expectations. “

The GradExpertTM is very sophisticated and high tech equipment that allows Busque & Laflamme to produce even more than before, says Mr. Carmin Hamel.

As for the GradExpertTM installed at Busque & Laflamme, Mr. Hamel also challenged Comact’s engineers. Indeed, the drawing team had to design an adapted GradExpertTM model so that it could be integrated to the existing planning line and be operated at a speed of 120 pieces per minute. Mr. Hamel points out that the proximity of Comact people was an important factor in the success of the project, both in terms of geographical proximity and to the high involvement of each in the project. “These projects are very personalized; that is why it is interesting to work with our local people. Also, the installation and startup went well. We have been really well served and the startup was done in record time “, says the company president.

It is important to mention that the GradExpertTM, an automated lumber grader, is a very sophisticated and high tech equipment that allows Busque & Laflamme to produce even more than before. Carmin Hamel says: “There is improvement in the recovery and grading of wood. Performance yields are achieved. It’s a great job. “

When we asked the president of both organizations why Comact stands out as a great choice for the purchase of wood processing equipment, he replied without hesitation that it is because of the project management, respected tight deadlines, rigorous working methods and because the last two major projects have given results that met expectations and for the experience and ingenuity of these people to meet very specific needs because each project has its own requirements.

In conclusion, Mr. Hamel says that as part of these projects, Comact people were in full control of the situation. “Each project has its share of changes and corrections; the Comact team had everything taken care of and we were very well supported throughout the installation and startup of the equipment. Subsequently, the after-sales service has also responded effectively to all our expectations.”
